As part of London Climate Action Week, B-CCaS brought together academics from the across the University of Edinburgh and industry partners, to explore how collaborative research is being applied to real-world challenges in finance and climate policy.
The event created space for practical exchange and future collaboration between academics, policymakers, investors and finance professionals.
Across six disciplines – spanning law, mathematics, veterinary medicine, social and political sciences, geosciences and business – speakers shared insights on how University of Edinburgh research is helping business and international climate finance policy.
The event included contributions from:
- The Law School and International Energy Agency body IEAGHG – on approaches to carbon capture and storage contracting in different countries and how to make projects investable
- The School of Mathematics, data analysis firm Canbury and Moody’s - on how new techniques in modelling flood risk uncertainty can help in insurance and financial decision-making
- The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, the Environmental Defense Fund and International Livestock Research Institute – on why livestock farming is a good fit for climate finance
- The School of Social and Political Sciences, Luminous and Neural Alpha – on why AI is good for sustainability reporting, and how it can help avoid "the PDF graveyard of sustainability reports”
- The School of Geosciences and software firm Earth Blox - on how satellite data helps in climate finance
- The Business School, fund manager Redwheel and NGO the Rocky Mountain Institute – on why avoided emissions accounting is useful and not greenwashing “we will not reach perfection but we can achieve useful”.
The venue for the event in London was kindly provided by Evelyn Partners who are a Founding Partner of the University's Compassion in Financial Services Hub - another example of how academic and industry collaboration is creating a more sustainable financial system.
